The lion-hearted founding chairman of the SDF gave the hint at a press dinner in Yaoundé Thursday, February 11, 2021.
After failing to present himself as a candidate at the October 2018 presidential elections saying it was time for the youth to take up the challenge, Fru Ndi has once again said the future of the SDF is in the hands of “the young vibrant people” bubbling with new ideas.
“…it’s time to hand over leadership to young vibrant people with new ideas on how to move on with the political party and Cameroon,” Fru Ndi told journalists.
He said the SDF will continue the fight for change and the advancement of democracy in Cameroon, adding that he must not always be at the forefront for things to be done. He said he will stay committed to the party and continue to support the youth so they can succeed where he failed.
To those who consider him a failure because he failed to become President of the Republic, Fru Ndi said leadership is not all about becoming president of Cameroon. He said the SDF has stayed through to its mission. He said that were it not for the SDF, democracy in Cameroon would not be where it is today.
Born on July 7, 1941, Fru Ndi braved bullets to launch the SDF in Bamenda on May 26, 1990, in Bamenda. The birth of the party reintroduced multiparty democracy in Cameroon.
For the last 31 years as National Chairman of the SDF, Fru Ndi has presented himself as a candidate at the 1992, 2004, and 2011 presidential elections. It is widely believed that the incumbent stole his victory in 1992.
Fru Ndi failed to become a senator in 2013 when he led a list in the North West Region.
On June 28, 2019, armed separatists stormed Fru Ndi’s Ntarinkon residence, beat, and dragged him into captivity. This was the second abduction, coming after that of April 27, 2019, as he went to bury Hon. Joseph Banadzem.
After the incidents, Fru Ndi flew to the United States for medical attention and only returned at the close of 2020.
