An American missionary was killed on Tuesday in fightings between Cameroon security forces and armed separatists in Bambui, Nort West region of the country, sources said.
Charles Trumann Wesco, who had been in the region only for two weeks with his wife and eight children succumbed to bullet wounds at the Bamenda Regional Hospital after he was caught in the cross fire.
The missionary’s brother who is Indiana state Representative. Tim Wesco, confirmed that his older brother had been killed.
“He loved the Lord. He loved people. The Lord giveth. The Lord taketh away. Blessed be the name of the Lord,” he told the Associated Press.
Cameroon’s army spokesperson Didier Badject said four suspected armed separatists had been killed while several persons were arrested in connection to the missionary’s death.
The localities of Bambui and Bambili in the Tubah sub ivision of the North West region have witnessed an upsurge of violence in recent weeks with security forces battling separatist fighters for the past two days.
Last week, authorities of the University of Bamenda said unidentified armed men had killed the Director of Administrative Affairs at the institution Paul Mbufong in Bambui as he was on his way to work.
