First-timer, The Comoros Islands has recorded the first defeat in the first-ever match of the Africa Cup of Nations. The team was humbled by the Panthers of Gabon by a 1-0 victory.
It was the second match in Group C, fielded at the Amadou Ahidjo Stadium in Yaoundé, Cameroon.
Gabon’s winning goal came at the 17th minute when Aaron Salem Boupendza, opened scores with one of the most unique goals of the competition this far. He therefore emerged man of the match, after security victory for his team.
The Comoros Islands has made history by featuring in the 33rd Africa Cup of Nations, regardless the defeat , contrary to Gabon which now counts eight appearances.
Besides, Comoros Islands is not looking to win every single match. During the Coelacanth’s pre – match conference, Ben Mohamed El Fadou said the team’s objective is “not to win all the matches. We are conscious that with 5 points, we will proceed to the next round.That will be our focus”.
Meanwhile, Kassim Abdalla of the Comoros Islands got a yellow card, and could miss the team’s next match.
The Islanders have received moral support from their President, Azali Assoumani, and wife who flew into Cameroon on Saturday January 8 for the competition.
The Coelacanths scored only 6 goals during qualifications for the Africa Cup of Nations. On Friday, January 15, the team will lock horns with Morocco, while Gabon confronts Ghana .
Gabon and Morocco are now leading Group C with 3 points each, while Comoros and Ghana have no point yet.
